How to Attach Cement Board – A wall of concrete blocks in your home or basement cannot coordinate with the design style you are trying to achieve. One of the least costly ways to cover up your concrete block is drywall. The only thing that sets this project apart from any other drywall project is to attach the drywall to the concrete block. Hanging drywall on the walls of concrete blocks requires the use of battens. furring strips are long, narrow strips of wood that are attached to the concrete block. The strips usually run vertically along the wall. The plaster may then be attached to the strips.

- Measuring tape
- Circular saw
- Anchor

- Drywall

Step by Step
- Determine where you will install furring strips along your block walls. The strips should be about 16 to 24 inches apart and fall in the center and each edge of the drywall sheets. The wood is hung vertically. Measure and mark the walls with a pencil to determine the placement of the battens.
- Measure the height of the wall from floor to ceiling. Trim each strip with a circular saw to match these measurements.
- Locate a brand for your furring band. Measure the floor wall up to 24 inches. Drill a hole through the concrete block with a masonry bit. Make another hole 24 inches above the first. Repeat all the way up to the wall every 24 inches. Make corresponding holes in the furring band.
- Hold the furring strip in place. Slide an anchor through the furring strip and into the concrete block. Put a screw through the strap and into the anchor. Tighten the screw to secure the inlay strip to the wall. Repeat this process for the other pre-drilled holes.
- Follow the same process to hang furring strips along the walls according to their markings.
- Hold a piece of masonry wall up to the wall and align it so that each end of the plaster sheet sits in the middle of the inlay strips on both sides. Attach the drywall to the furring strips with a nail gun and one-inch nail drywall. Repeat for all drywall sheets.
Tips & Warnings
The most difficult part of this work is planning. You want to plan your furring strips so that each piece of drywall is nailed to the wood along both edges. Two sheets of drywall will gather in the center of a furring strip.
