Step 1

Remove the cold ash from the wood stove immediately in an outer ash bucket. Ash is a concentrated source of the odor, so regular removal helps to control the smell of smoke.

Step 2

Pour pure white vinegar into small decorative dishes and bowls. Add activated charcoal to larger decorative containers. Place containers around the room in discrete places. Pair white vinegar and activated charcoal absorb unpleasant odors.

Step 3

Sprinkle sodium bicarbonate on carpets and upholstered furniture, preferably at night, and in a vacuum in the morning. Baking soda absorbs some smoke and eliminates the odor, leaving a fresh smell.

Step 4

Wash the curtains more often than usual if you have washable curtains anywhere near your wood-burning stove. This helps not only to eliminate the smell of smoke but will make your curtains last longer, as the residues of fat smoke accumulation weaken the fabric lines.

Step 5

Powder upholstered furniture, curtains, curtains, and rugs with commercial odor removers like odor prohibition or Fabreze to control the smell of smoke.

Step 6

Use a simple household cleaning solution and deodorizing spray. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 2 cups of water in a bottle of spray pump to clean walls, upholstery, windows, mirrors, and cups. In larger batches can also be used to clean carpets. An alternative way, use equal amounts of white vinegar and water.
