A big question for most “plant parents” is how to choose the ideal pot for their little plant, as this object is not a simple decoration definition, and can be crucial for the health of the garden indoors. Often, when transplanting the seedling into a new pot, we notice the plant withered and lifeless – and this surely means that you ended up choosing an inappropriate model.

To avoid this situation and ensure that the pot is ideal, you need to understand more about the species you have at home. Root size or growth speed are key factors in this choice, as the product needs to have adequate space for the plant to develop properly. “The important thing is to choose a pot that has a size proportional to the adult plant. Ideally, the pot should be more or less the size of the plant’s crown, because the root develops at approximately that size, so it’s more a matter of proportion”, explain landscape architects, Luiz Gustavo and Luiz Fernando, from Folha Paisagismo.

Also pay attention to the frequency of watering the plant, since, as experts comment, the drainage system can drain more or less water, so it is necessary to choose a pot that meets these demands. In addition, the material can also affect this decision. “For example, a very porous vase-like ceramic can lose and evaporate more water. In these cases, prefer a plastic, polyethylene, vitrified vase, or something similar”, they explain.

It is worth mentioning the difference between vases and cachepots. Cachepots are nothing more than pot holders, that is, more beautiful objects that are produced in different materials, but which do not have any drainage system or functionality, in addition to bringing more charm to the place.

“The cachepot has this name because it is more decorative, so it is not usually that vase to carry out the planting. It is more beautiful and is usually on display, so it ends up hiding a simpler vase where the species was planted”, say the landscapers, which also indicate how to use this decoration product: “We suggest that the cachepot be mounted with a layer of expanded clay underneath, to ensure that the plant pot will not be touching the bottom. So, in case of water accumulates, the plant will not drown, generating more security due to this draining layer”.

Regarding how the piece will match the decoration of the environment, Silvana Novaes, director of Vasart, a store specializing in decorative vases, says that this depends on the taste of each one, however, she also chooses three elements to take into account when choosing. “First, take into account the color palette of the environment, where you can match the rest of the elements of the house or, on the contrary, you can upgrade the space by betting on a different palette”.

Other aspects to take into account are size and design since to make your choice easier, you can invest in styles that are similar to the rest of the house.

“Another important feature to comment on is the self-watering system, which can be very useful in the rush of everyday life and guarantees the health of the plant. Therefore, it is worth investing in self-watering pots”, she concludes.
