How to clean a mattress: meet 5 techniques for efficient hygiene
Contrary to what many people think, knowing how to clean a mattress is not an extremely complicated or laborious task. It is possible to use homemade solutions and simple care for satisfactory cleaning.
It is worth remembering, however, that for deep hygiene (which removes all accumulated microorganisms) it is worth relying on the services of a specialized company. Check out 5 effective techniques for cleaning your mattress at home!
1. Cleaning with a vacuum cleaner
The vacuum cleaner is a great ally of mattress cleaning, being a valuable tool for different homemade solutions. In this technique, after removing the bed linen and the “bedding skirt” (if it is a box bed), you should vacuum the entire length of the object, not forgetting any corner.
The next step is to apply a cleaning product, which helps remove the mites. A good tip is to use powdered soap or coconut soap diluted in water, passing the liquid with the help of a sponge. Rub especially the dirtiest and most stained regions.
After cleaning, be sure to leave the mattress airing until it fully dwells. Moisture provides the emergence of more mites! Place the object in the sun or rely on the “work” of a fan in the process.
2. Sodium bicarbonate recipe
If you were wondering how to clean a mattress “dry” at home, this is the right technique! Here, you will count on the use of an important item for any domestic hygiene: baking soda. In addition to the product (which changes the pH of the bedding and is excellent for taking stains), you will need a soft brush and, once again, the vacuum cleaner.
First, apply bicarbonate on the mattress, throwing the product mainly in the dirtiest and most grimy areas. Leave to act for 30 minutes and then rub the surface with the brush. Wait another half an hour. Then just extract all the dust with the vacuum cleaner. Cleanup completed!
3. How to clean mattress with alcohol vinegar
This solution is especially efficient for mattresses that are impregnated with strong odors such as cigarettes and urine. Take note of the “recipe”:
- Half a liter of white alcohol vinegar;
- Baking soda;
- 3 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide (10 volumes);
- Spray;
- Sponge;
- Vacuum cleaner.
First, wear gloves, moisten the sponge in the hydrogen peroxide and rub the mattress stains. Finish by passing a wet cloth in water. The next step is to sprinkle the bicarbonate on the surface and spray the vinegar on top – especially where the stains or odors are stronger. Wait an hour (a foam will be formed).
Finish with the use of a vacuum cleaner, removing the remnants of the products. After the complete drying of the mattress, the smell of vinegar disappears!
4. How to clean grimy mattress
With the time of use, it is natural that the mattress looks yellowish. To remove this “grimy” look, you can use a homemade technique that uses bleach, bicarbonate, and white vinegar. You will need:
- 1 teaspoon bleach;
- 1 tablespoon baking soda;
- 250 ml white vinegar;
- 500 ml warm water.
By mixing bleach, vinegar, and warm water into the spray, spread the solution on the mattress. Then, as in other tips, sprinkle the bicarbonate on the surface. Leave it to work for approximately 1:30. Finally, just rub with a damp cloth. If yellowish spots are still left, repeat the procedure until you get the desired result.
5. How to clean a mattress by removing blood stains
Bloodstains (as well as all those of biological origin) can be eliminated with the help of good old detergent. However, do not apply the product directly to the mattress – the correct thing is to pass it with a damp cloth. Let the solution act for 20 minutes and finish with a dry cloth.
In the case of the most difficult stains, apply the hydrogen peroxide 10 volumes with a brush or cloth, cleaning the excess then.
